Our Faithful Companions!

We became actively involved in Curly Coated Retrievers and active members in good standing with the National Curly-Coated Retriever Club of America (CCRCA) in 1993 soon after meeting a Curly at a basic dog obedience class and falling instantly in love with the breed. After inquiring, we became the proud owners of a 3 1/2 year old male slightly used Curly in need of re-homing due to a family lifestyle change and the fun began! We were introduced to the Dog Show World and were bitten by the dog show bug. It did not take long for us to realize that one Curly was simply not enough for both of us and we then secured our first Curly puppy. As years have passed we have broadened our involvement to include Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds and Beagles.  If you are interested in Curly, Dachshunds or Beagles the best things you can possibly do is RESEARCH. Research the breed and talk with as many breeders as possible and ask questions. You also may want to consider a rescue or an adult in need of rehoming. The internet offers a vast amount of information. Doing your homework now could save you a lot of misery later.

Litters at DESE Kennels are infrequent. We prefer to think of ourselves as professional hobbyists. Much thought and planning is put into each litter in an effort for long-term planning of future litters. Planned breedings occur only from parents that have passed rigid healthy screenings and clearances. We absolutely encourage all potential puppy buyers to visit DESE Kennel if at all possible. We feel strongly that visiting any place that you may purchase a puppy is very important regardless of your final decision. You should see the environment from which your puppy is coming from. You should have a set list of questions to ask personally of the breeder. You should look at the whole picture and not simply grab the first puppy that is convenient and/or available as this is a lifelong commitment often ten to fifteen years or more. So do your homework! Become educated, make phone calls, surf the Internet.

Potential DESE puppy owners are asked to fill out a screening questionnaire that will assist in determining which puppy is right for you. Key factor questions such as describing your neighborhood, children and family lifestyle assist in making good solid decisions for both us. Questions concerning personal preferences of color and gender are asked in the event that we, the breeders, feel that there is more than one possible choice of pups for the new owner.

Pups are placed in either “pet” homes or “show” homes. Requesting a “show” puppy for the purpose of obtaining the “best puppy that money can buy” will not secure you a “better” puppy. Pet homes are required to sign a spay/neuter agreement. Show homes are required to sign a show/title agreement. Final decision to placement of each pup is the responsibility of the breeder.

In conclusion, our life with our beloved companions is a constant learning endeavor. We continually find the need to improve and modify ways in which we involve ourselves in all aspects of these wonderful breeds. We enjoy what we do. We like to feel we are flexible and encourage you to bring up absolutely anything you are not clear on or comfortable with. Agreements and contracts are only as good as the people that sign them. Thank you, and please do not hesitate to call, e-mail and/or visit DESE Curly-Coated Retrievers & Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds
